The Ampac KDF GAC water filter combines three filtration and treatment media in a single 10″ cartridge. One water filter replacement cartridge handles chlorine removal, helps reduce heavy metals, clears the bad taste and odor from municipal drinking water, and inhibits scale – jobs that would otherwise need three separate inline filters. It drops into standard housings used in whole-house water filter systems, and works equally well as a stand-alone house water filtration system or as the pretreatment stage ahead of a reverse osmosis unit.

What Each KDF GAC Filter Media Does

  • KDF media (Kinetic Degradation Fluxion): Reduces free chlorine and chloramines through a redox reaction, and helps reduce heavy metals such as lead, mercury, and arsenic. Also controls hydrogen sulfide (rotten egg odor) and inhibits bacteria and algae growth within the filter bed, which extends service life compared to carbon-only cartridges.
  • GAC (Granular Activated Carbon): Adsorbs the bad taste and chlorine odor that make tap water unpleasant to drink, along with volatile organic compounds (VOCs), disinfection byproducts such as trihalomethanes (THMs), and trace pesticide residues. The KDF media upstream extends GAC life by cutting the chlorine load before water reaches the carbon bed.
  • Poly Phosphate: A sequestering agent that coats pipe walls and fitting surfaces with a thin protective film. This film slows scale buildup from hard water minerals and reduces corrosion in metal plumbing, protecting water heaters, RO membranes, and downstream equipment.

Where This KDF GAC Water Filter Fits

This cartridge uses the standard 10″ x 2.5″ form factor and drops into most residential filter housings, regardless of brand. Use it as a prefilter ahead of an RO membrane for high purity drinking water, as a direct swap in an existing multi-stage setup, or as a stand-alone point-of-entry filter on the main line. It’s a practical fit for both compact under-sink water filter systems and larger whole house water filtration system installations – no housing modification needed.

Replacement Schedule

Replace this water filter replacement cartridge every 6 to 12 months under normal residential use. High-chlorine municipal water or heavy flow volume shortens service life toward the 6-month end. Replace sooner if you notice reduced flow at the outlet, chlorine taste or bad odor returning to your drinking water, or visible discoloration when the cartridge is removed.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does KDF-GAC filtration remove?

KDF media reduces free chlorine and chloramines, helps reduce heavy metals such as lead, mercury, and arsenic, and controls hydrogen sulfide odor. GAC adsorbs bad taste, chlorine odor, VOCs, disinfection byproducts (THMs), and trace pesticide residues.

How often should this cartridge be replaced?

Replace every 6-12 months under normal residential use. High-chlorine municipal water or heavy flow volume shortens service life toward the 6-month end - watch for reduced flow, returning chlorine taste or odor, or visible discoloration.

What's poly-phosphate for?

It's a sequestering agent that coats pipe and fitting surfaces with a protective film, slowing scale buildup from hard water minerals and reducing corrosion - protecting water heaters, RO membranes, and downstream equipment.

What size housing does this fit?

The standard 10" x 2.5" form factor drops into most residential filter housings regardless of brand - works as an RO prefilter, a direct swap in a multi-stage setup, or a stand-alone point-of-entry filter.
