The Pura UVB2-EPCB/SD is a Pura water filtration UV system built for homes and businesses that want disinfected drinking water without chemicals. It’s part of AMPAC’s Pura filtration lineup and combines UV purification with mechanical and carbon filtration in one inline unit.

UV-C light at 254 nanometers disrupts pathogen DNA so bacteria, viruses, and cysts can’t reproduce. Taste and water chemistry stay the same. Pathogens can’t adapt to UV the way they build resistance to chlorine and other chemical disinfectants.

This unit installs inline on the output line of an existing filtration system. Most homeowners add it as the final stage after a reverse osmosis unit or carbon filter. It needs a 120V power connection and standard 3/8-inch or 1/2-inch push-fit line connections. Installation takes about 30 minutes.

What UV disinfection kills

The UVB-2 inactivates E. coli, Giardia lamblia, Cryptosporidium parvum, Legionella, Salmonella, and most common waterborne viruses. It carries NSF Standard 55 Class B certification, which confirms a minimum UV dose of 16 mJ/cm2 – the threshold for effective disinfection in treated municipal water supplies.

UV treats biology, not chemistry. It won’t remove lead, arsenic, nitrates, or fluoride. Those need an RO membrane upstream. If your water has both biological and chemical contamination, run the UV as the final stage after RO.

Built-in filtration

Ahead of the UV chamber, the system runs water through a 5-micron sediment filter and a 0.5-micron Extended Pass Carbon Block (EPCB) filter. Sediment comes out first. Then the carbon block pulls chlorine taste and odor before the water reaches the UV lamp. Clear water lets UV light penetrate fully, so pre-filtration isn’t optional – it’s part of how the disinfection stage does its job. Rated flow is 2 gallons per minute, sized for point-of-use drinking water rather than whole-house service.

Maintenance: lamps and quartz sleeves

Two parts wear out on a schedule. Replace the UV lamp every year. Output drops over time even while the lamp still lights up, and a dim lamp can look fine while delivering less than the rated dose. Clean the quartz sleeve annually too – iron, manganese, or hardness above 7 gpg leaves deposits that block UV transmission through the glass.

If your source water carries iron or hardness, treat it before the UV stage. Sleeve deposits are the most common reason a UV system underperforms after the first year.

Where it fits

The UVB2-EPCB/SD works with any pressurized line between 20 and 80 PSI, up to 125°F. It pairs directly with AMPAC residential RO systems, commercial RO systems, and standalone carbon filter setups – anywhere an existing filter system needs a UV purification stage added at the point of use. Ultraviolet systems like this one are common for well water and municipal water, since both can carry microbial contamination even after standard filtration.

AMPAC stocks replacement lamps and quartz sleeves for all current Pura UV water systems, including this model, so ongoing maintenance doesn’t mean hunting for parts. Like other Pura water filters in the lineup, this unit is built to slot into filter systems you already own rather than replace them – most UV disinfection systems require an upstream sediment and carbon stage to work properly, and this one ships with both.
